Making walls fall, welcoming the unforeseen, moving closer to what scares us, defying death, not remaining alone . . . Inventing Risk suggests that risk is a choice, a creation, a work of the imagination. It is an invitation to abandon habit and comfort and occasion the possibility of indefinite results, to leave a place for experimentation, dialogue, and the unknown, and in doing so to invent new ways to make art and to think the image. It represents a willingness to trust risk, but also in a larger sense it means having confidence in artists, ideas, art, and life.

Each year, VU presents some fifteen exhibitions of contemporary photography and media art. The centre also has a structured program of artists’ residencies leading to systematic public access to their work. Four to six artists are invited to carry out residencies in its laboratories for a period of several weeks each year. They are provided with free access to its equipment, full technical support and, when necessary, accommodation. VU regularly invites people to speak about issues in contemporary photography. The centre also makes its activities accessible to the public by enabling school and other groups to visit its facilities.
