Watch the river flow beneath the bridges, and remember that the water we see comes from far away and will travel great distances before it returns, that it is both old and new. Take a crow’s eye view to see what we were before, and some of what we might become. See the signs of disappearance and appearance at the same time. We may have to learn how to be open to the suffering of transformation, the pain of chipping away at our own walls. Like serpents, many bodies are ready for a new skin. Grab hold of what tends to solidify, soak it in water, and see what results: mould, new life, innumerable colours. Walk amongst the ruins of past dreams, and listen to the whispers that urge us to turn them into many-headed creatures.
The futures of serpents are multiple. For VU, they are actions to be undertaken, movements that never cease, transformations. This is the perspective informing the design of our new program, in which we devote the coming year to observing what happens when our fragilities take the lead and open new and unexpected avenues before us. The artists we welcome into our production, exhibition, and publishing programs are open to what happens beyond the here and now, and in their works they attend to the possible futures of beings and images.
