Guillaume Adjutor Provost

Guillaume Adjutor Provost works in drawing, performance, installation and photography. His work has been shown in recent solo and group exhibitions at Le Lieu in Quebec City, the XPACE cultural centre in Toronto, Écart in Rouyn-Noranda and the festival Viva! Art Action, among others. Guillaume Adjutor Provost is currently completing a master's degree in visual arts at Université Laval.

Alexandre Jeanson

Alexandre Jeanson was born in Quebec City and completed a bachelor's degree at Université Laval's École des arts visuels in 2008. He has won the René-Richard award and the Prix VU. In 2007 his work was included in a group exhibition at the Galerie du Cercle in Quebec City. He is currently sojourning in Paris, where he is working on his photographic subjects and techniques.

Guillaume Adjutor Provost, Vicky Sabourin and Alexandre Jeanson benefited from creation residencies at VU which were made possible by the support of PREMIÈRE OVATION.

Changements d'identités: œuvres de fiction

There is, in the respective work of the artists Guillaume Adjutor Provost, Vicky Sabourin and Alexandre Jeanson, a clear desire to invent and narrate. Here we are not in the presence of images that have been manipulated or digitally altered, but of well-crafted subjects, proclaiming loud and clear their fictional aspect. These photographs have the potential to distort memory, reinterpret codes and imagine reality as a story telling its story.

With his series of photographs La marchandise absente, Guillaume Adjutor Provost has fabricated dubious information. He designed rudimentary objects to clothe and surround female figures whose identities, often partially masked, become secondary. These models are clearly there to have their portraits taken, to be transformed by and for the photographer. At the same time, the artist and his discourse retreat into the background in favour of a confused reality, offered to the viewer as an experience without bearings.

Vicky Sabourin also stages relatively trivial objects and herself plays the part of her feminine characters, who are inspired by figures such as Little Red Riding Hood. She thereby examines and shifts the image of women jealously preserved by an often hidebound collective memory. The photographic tableau vivant Promenons-nous dans les bois evokes a turning point in a girl's life, when she reaches puberty and loses herself in no-longer innocent games of seduction, dreaming up a reconciliation with the wolf.

The mise en scène of Alexandre Jeanson, for its part, is highly spectacular. Jeanson organises spaces and models in images whose deep colours and chiaroscuros contribute to the creation of completely dream-like worlds. The excessive make-up and wacky costumes, created from scratch by the artist, are also a part of these unusual stories. Nevertheless, the photographs in Chimères have a troubling familiarity, as if they were an extravagant simulacrum of our contemporary existence.

The work of these three emerging artists creates playful worlds offered up as such, with their wellencamped roles and make-believe. They establish from the outset a complicit dialogue with the viewer, who is essential to this plunge into the space of doubt.
