BPM 37093

Situated approximately fifty light years from our solar system, BPM 37093 is a star that has reached the end of its existence: its core has crystallized, transforming its mass of carbon into a gigantic diamond. Proceeding from this premise, Julie Tremble has created a series of video, photographic and audio narratives that derive their form and content from processes of radical transformation, such as the one that altered the white dwarf star BPM 37093.

Owing to their enormous scale, astronomical phenomena are beyond direct perception; existing for scientists in the form of graphics and mathematical calculations, these objects are understood by most people only through a process of fictionalization. The project BPM 37093 constructs fictional spaces based on the vocabulary of films and documentaries, reflecting upon the codes and clichés of the Hollywood spectacular, by which one attempts to represent the unrepresentable.

The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Mois Multi.
