About the Artist

About the Exhibition

Born in 1984, Stéphanie Roland lives and works in Brussels, but also around the world, following the rhythm of her artist's residencies. She develops her multidisciplinary practice and experimentations around the photographic image, questioning the fictional aspect of the medium and its relation to cinema. Her work has been presented in many international exhibitions, notably in Los Angeles, Buenos Aires, Barcelona, and Athens. She holds a degree from the École nationale supérieure des arts visuels de La Cambre and has received many prizes and grants, including a grant from the Fondation de la Vocation, the Prix Médiatine du public, and the 2012 Full Contact Award from the SCAN International Photography Festival, Tarragona. She was recently nominated for the Prix HSBC pour la Photographie and the Leica Oskar Barnack Award.

Trou noir et rituels familiaux

On blue backgrounds that evoke the expanse of the universe, the outlines of a study of family rituals emerge. Drawing from the imaginaries of cinema and science, Stéphanie Roland stages everyday objects, which are taken out of their context to participate in a mysterious intrigue. In a science-fiction atmosphere, the representation of family relations collides with that of cosmic phenomena, as though the complexity of the psychology of the family could interact with the complexity of astrophysics. Adopting an almost sculptural approach to photography, the artist by turns transforms the object into an image and the image into an object, constructing a photographic fiction that transports us to a space where it is almost possible to touch to black holes.

The artist wishes to thank the Bureau International Jeunesse of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles
