About the Artist

About the Exhibition

Jonas St.Michael was born in Montreal. He holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Goldsmiths, University of London, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Concordia University in Montréal. His photographic practice explores the nature of representation and its relation to wider social and cultural contexts. Although his projects are diverse, they share a common theme inasmuch as they attempt to communicate a social reality while addressing the zone between truth and fiction in representational imagery. St.Michael has exhibited nationally and internationally, including exhibitions at OK Harris (New York City, USA) and Latitude 53 (Edmonton, Canada). He has an upcoming solo exhibition at the Orleans Gallery at the Ottawa School of Art. In January 2016 he will be an artist-in-residence at the British School at Rome.

Shade and Shelter

The places and scenes in Jonas St.Michael's photographs provoke us to reflect on the spaces that we inhabit as well as the spaces that inhabit us. If some of the places represented can initially be seen as physical sites, they also give the impression of being psychological spaces, like reflexive tableaux in which everything seems to have been interrupted. Drawn from different series produced between 2009 and 2014, the images presented here were taken in various places and show the meeting of richness and emptiness, excess and shortage. The artist forces a meeting of worlds that are divided but nevertheless share an impression of immobility, of time standing still, if only for the photographic instant. The scenes call for projection, in which shade has the potential to become shelter.
