About the Artist

About the Exhibition

Caroline Cloutier lives and works in Montréal and works mainly in photography and installation. Her work has been presented in exhibitions at artist-run centres, symposiums, and art fairs in Québec and Toronto. Her first international residency was in 2014 in Linz, Austria, where she began the research that led to the body of work Contre-espaces; an exhibition there in 2016 will be the first international presentation of her work. Cloutier has received grants from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the SODEC. She holds a Bachelor of Fine and Media Arts from UQAM and is represented by Galerie Nicolas Robert, Montréal.

Contre-espaces (déploiements)

Exploring space and "counter-space," light and its refraction, the photographs of Caroline Cloutier present a mirror module which, by means of multiple arrangements, causes the surfaces to reflect each other and the open space that surrounds them. Posed and composed, the mirrors are presented as physical objects, as in a still life, but they also make the reflections of an intangible space appear, broken up in the folding and unfolding of the composition. In a way, the out-of-frame space that is ordinarily situated beyond the image finds itself within the photograph, multiplied across many facets. The numerous refractions of planes and light are an invitation to get lost in a game of perspective diversion and in a constant reorientation of the gaze. The eye can try to create a trajectory leading outside the frame to reach the edges of the space, but also to find a zone inside the image where everything seems to converge.

Parallel to this exhibition, Caroline Cloutier presents Contre-espaces : emboîtements at the Galerie Nicolas Robert from 14 May to 18 May 2016.

Caroline Cloutier wishes to thank VU, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, Sagamie, Kunstsammlung des Landes OÖ and Salzamt Atelierhaus.
