Photography is everywhere, and it dwells within us, even when we are not conscious of it. Sometimes associated with the past, sometimes referred to as an "image" an idea of photography often lingers in the work of artists who do not call themselves photographers. APPAREILLAGE brings together artists who integrate photographic thought into practices that are first and foremost painterly, sculptural, or installation-based. The exhibition looks at the legacy of concepts and mechanisms inherent to photography, and how the medium has participated in the construction of these works or in their reception. Sometimes nostalgic, sometimes critical, the works presented invoke the basic elements of photography, such as light and framing, or question the power of the photographic image through its modes of construction and its relations with other images. They offer an oblique perspective on the current state of the medium, bearing witness to its strong presence in contemporary art practices.

APPAREILLAGE is part of the Inventing Risk programming, which invites us to reconsider the way we make art and the way we think the image.

Pascal Gingras's project was produced during a residency at VU in January 2018.
