Two old prints : here, a ship with one smokestack follows a thin strip of land along the horizon; there, a larger ship with three smokestacks sails in an endless sea. Not knowing the stories behind these two found photographs, Christopher Boyne makes them a point of departure for telling new ones. In an attempt to reproduce the effects of similitude observed in the two images, the artist creates fictions that are their equivalent. A narration for each vessel situates it in an imagined space-time, while a pennant associates each with a fictional shipping line. These unknown ships are thus granted new identities, allowing them to go beyond the fixity of the image and meet in fiction.
Biographie
Né à Halifax en 1984, Christopher Boyne détient un baccalauréat en arts visuels de la Ryerson University de Toronto et une maîtrise en pratique des arts de l’Université Concordia. Il vit et travaille à Montréal et à Halifax. Son travail a été présenté au Canada et aux États-Unis. Ses plus récentes expositions incluent stepside au Harbourfront Center de Toronto et Geneva à Access Gallery de Vancouver. Boyne figure aussi parmi le premier groupe d’artistes retenus pour le programme de résidence Twenty-three Days at Sea: A Travelling Artist Residency (Vingt-trois jours en mer : une résidence d’artiste itinérante). Il a également participé à une résidence aux Îles-de-la-Madeleine, intitulée Le Chant des pistes et organisée par le centre d’artistes Admare.
