At first glance, our impression of Christian Forget is conditioned by his appearance: that of a man who is old and abnormal, whose pallid complexion and atypical body gestures and facial expressions are caused by a genetic condition that also affects his vision. Previously appearing as a staged body in earlier works by Matthieu Brouillard, Christian is here engaged in a project which is intimate to him and also improbable: flight. The photographic and video works portray him carrying out the necessary steps to go beyond his fantasy and give form to his vision. Diverting our instinctual curiosity about the anomalous, the work directs our attention to what a priori cannot be seen if not shown through actions a force at work in the pursuit of an ambition.

Biographie
Matthieu Brouillard est un artiste visuel né à Montréal en 1976. Il a étudié les arts visuels et médiatiques à l’Université du Québec à Montréal, où il a obtenu un doctorat avec une thèse portant sur la photographie et la notion de « crise du sujet » chez les penseurs français du poststructuralisme. Son travail plastique et ses écrits ont été présentés dans de nombreuses publications (Ciel Variable, SHOTS Magazine, revue Les Écrits, Samuel Beckett Aujourd’hui), galeries et institutions liées aux arts (Dazibao, Gallery 44, OBORO, Photoforum Pasquart, Musée de l’Élysée, Le Fresnoy, Kunsthalle Bern, iaab Projektraum, Musée d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul). Brouillard a collaboré avec des metteurs en scène de théâtre et pris part à un projet qui visait à mettre en relation architecture, littérature et vidéo (Les Archi-fictions, 2006). Il a été chargé de cours et chercheur invité dans diverses universités et écoles d’art (Université de Zürich, Université de Berne, Université des arts et du design de Karlsruhe, Département Cinéma/Cinéma du réel de la Haute École d’arts et de design de Genève). Il a publié trois livres : Narragonie(avec un avant-propos du romancier Gaétan Soucy, J’ai VU, 2007); Darkness Implacable (avec un essai de James D. Campbell, Sagamie, 2013); et Coming Through the Fog (en duo avec Donigan Cumming, publié par Sagamie et la Galerie FoFA, 2012). Dans ces livres se combinent recherche plastique, attrait pour des considérations d’ordre psychologique et existentiel, et observations de natures théorique et historique sur la photographie. Son travail fait partie de collections privées et publiques au Canada, en Allemagne et en Suisse et a reçu maintes fois le soutien du Conseil des arts du Canada, du Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec et du Fonds québécois de recherche sur la société et la culture (FQRSC).
