The high-security psychiatric institution, the police academy, the forensic medicine laboratory: different sites where power is exercised through detention, training, and inquiry. Penetrating into these sites, which are difficult to access, Emmanuelle Léonard looks for signs that reveal the ambiguity of their function; in such places, the guard, the police officer, and the caregiver are no less subject to observation than the criminal and the patient. With an apparent objectivity that is reflected in the coldness of the spaces, her photographs present scenes that are constructed in the interest of simulation, study, and inquiry. Though devoid of action or presence, the spaces themselves make evident the meeting of the real and the fictive, through clues of a form of surveillance which appear among the props and imitations.

Biographie
Née en 1971 à Montréal où elle vit, Emmanuelle Léonard détient un baccalauréat de l’Université Concordia et une maîtrise de l’Université du Québec à Montréal. Son travail a été présenté dans de nombreuses expositions, notamment au Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, à la Kunsthaus Dresden et au Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (Allemagne), à la Art Gallery of Ontario et à Mercer Union (Toronto), au Mois de la Photo à Montréal et à Optica (Montréal), à L’Œil de Poisson (Québec) et à Expression, Saint-Hyacinthe. L’artiste participe à la Triennale québécoise de 2011, à la Biennale de Montréal de 2014 et à l’exposition À Montréal, quand l’image rôde au Fresnoy (France), en 2013. Elle a effectué des résidences d’artistes à la Villa Arson (France), à la Fondation Christoph Mérian (Suisse) et à la Fondation finlandaise de résidences d’artistes (Finlande). Récipiendaire du Prix Pierre-Ayot en 2005, elle a été nominée pour le Grange Prize en 2012, et finaliste du premier Prix en art actuel du Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec en 2013 et du Prix Louis-Comtois en 2014. Elle est sélectionnée pour le Programme d’arts des Forces canadiennes pour une résidence en 2017.
