Ondes lumineuses is the fruit of a residency exchange with VU’s Scottish counterpart Street Level Photoworks, who, for their part, are hosting the sister exhibition Lightwaves in Glasgow. We aim for this mirror-play between the two exhibitions to be a vector for the desire to understand and communicate via the photographic medium: What limitations do the contours of our territories impose on the circulation of ideas? How does the ocean separating us play a role in our exchanges, and our identity? What transpires within our encounters, and what is the nature of the relationships these encounters create? In grappling with these questions, Pedneault, Letoré, Hay and Carrière were able to anticipate the territories and those that inhabit them, and to capture narrative fragments of lived experience resonating with their own pre-existences, wanderings, and intimate “elsewhere” places. As such, the artists both took advantage and transcended the freedom they were given throughout our respective continents, allowing them to make concrete and share with the public their rich and promise-filled explorations.
