For Assemblages, two artists will share the exhibition space as a place for the creation of photobook maquettes, where different ways of writing with images and setting them in relation to one another will be experimented with over time. Photographs of different kinds accumulated over the years by Alexandre Berthier will meet the images of L’eau dans les pierres, a project by Catherine Lebel Ouellet on the transformation of landscape. Around a table and on the walls, each artist’s research will unfold and spread out until the two practices eventually join in collaboration. The exhibition will make visible the artists’ creative processes, while also occasioning reflection on what exchange between artists represents, and on the ways the photographs themselves speak to and contaminate one another, and how through these interactions each finally finds a voice of its own.

The idea for Assemblages came out of Alexandre Berthier’s residency at VU in fall 2016.

This exhibition is part of the Inventing Risk programming, which invites us to reconsider the way we make art and the way we think the image.
