The numerals 4, 5 and 9, noticed here and there

Each little nothing is observed with the attention one gives to something precious—it seems that the gaze has come to rest on something that could just as well have been ignored. Once we realize that the numbers 4, 5 and 9 are the birth dates of loved ones, that the yellow-rumped warbler was found beneath a window by a friend, these little nothings are animated with a certain affect. A relationship is formed between the person and the object and its surroundings.
Guided by the influence of personal fascinations, collections are also portraits of those who amass them. Built over years, whether while wandering through the city or after long consideration, these collections have taken shape under the attentive eyes of artists who then transform them into images. Through play, nostalgia, or empathy, little nothings are pulled out of banality or certain disappearance and welcomed into the heart of an artificial ecosystem. The place they occupy in this newfound construct brings about a shift in perspective that allows us to see what is truly magical about them.
Biographies
Gaston Côté (1964-2022), diplômé en design graphique de l’Université Laval, a fondé, avec Isabelle Drouin, Paquebot design, un studio expérimental. C’est dans cet environnement qu’il a pu cultiver sa passion de l’image et de la typographie qui lui on permit de remporter plusieurs prix et mentions – Type Director Club (New York), Coupe Magazine (Toronto), Grafika, How (États-Unis) et Applied Art (Toronto) – ainsi que des publications dans le Eye Magazine (Royaume-Uni) et le Item (Pays-Bas). Avec Paquebot, cette passion de l’image l’a amené à monter une collection d’ouvrages, objets et autres curiosités, qui s’est avéré une source intarissable d’inspiration. Plusieurs projets d’édition à compte d’auteur en témoignent dont des publications de 2004 à 2012 de la série «Journées particulières», qui souligne la concordance numérale du jour, du mois et de l’année en cours. Il publia aussi, en 2014, «Le millénaire Tome II» une publication de mille pages de calendrier de l’an 1001 à l’an 2000 incluant une œuvre d’art par année. En 2016, il publia le 14 mars, (03.14 16) le nombre pi. avec un million de décimal après le point, incluant anecdotes et statistiques numériques.
