Presented in collaboration with Mois Multi, Scott Massey exploits the materials and apparatus of photography to create a new image vocabulary.
Movement without Moving is a group of photographs, video works, and sculptures exploring invisible movement and the opposition between the mobile and immobile. By finding new ways to use materials, optical instruments, and devices to create photographic images, Scott Massey creates a space for a kind of poetic contingency giving rise to unexpected phenomena that echo those observed in nature and in space. The artist uses mechanical games and ingenious processes to create images where mobility, often illusory or intangible, takes material form. Evoking the imperceptible movement of the cosmos and the transformation of celestial bodies, the selected works place visitors face-to-face with the infinite universe, triggering a sense of vertigo as they confront such immensity.

Biographie
Scott Massey vit et travaille à Vancouver et à l’île Bowen, en Colombie-Britannique. Ses œuvres explorent la confluence entre l’art et la science par l’accentuation et l’amplification des phénomènes naturels, souvent intensifiées par des moyens artificiels ou par de légères manipulations, et se basant sur ses recherches dans les domaines de la physique, la cosmologie, l’astronomie et autres disciplines scientifiques. L’utilisation de la lumière comme moyen et comme dispositif de créations d’images est un aspect essentiel de sa pratique, employée à la fois dans le processus de création et la présentation de l’œuvre. Ses œuvres basées sur l’image confondent les méthodologies habituelles des médias en inversant parfois les procédés ou en dénaturant les dispositifs. Ses productions sculpturales emploient souvent un élément performatif ou duratif qui active d’autant plus la création.
Scott Massey détient un B.B.A en photographie de l’Université d’art et de design Emily Carr de Vancouver et il a effectué des résidences au Klondike Institute of Arts and Culture (Cité de Dawson, Yukon), au Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity (Banff, Alberta; 2010 et 2017), au Dazibao/PRIM (Montréal, Québec) et au Lumen Collective (Atina, Italie). Il a reçu quatre subventions de production et création du British Columbia Arts Council et du Conseil des arts du Canada, ainsi que de nombreuses bourses d’études et récompenses.
