Sculptures, branches, rocks, and sand accumulate in the space and extend the photographs of an artist’s studio, and the gallery becomes a studio where Leisure puts the ideas of English sculptor Barbara Hepworth (1903-75) and her son the architect Simon Nicholson (1934-90) into practice. In a society that could not easily reconcile maternity and art, Hepworth was forced to reinvent her workplace and methods to make space for children and their interventions. Drawing on this idea of creative play and thought, Leisure presents creativity as an exploratory and collaborative process that children are invited to participate in. Turning the gallery into creative space proposes an experience that is less contemplative and which incites us to play an active role in the artwork.
This exhibition is part of the Inventing Risk programming, which invites us to reconsider the way we make art and the way we think the image.
Biographie
Leisure (Meredith Carruthers et Susannah Wesley) est un collectif basé à Montréal avec une pratique conceptuelle et collaborative. Travaillant ensemble sous le nom « Leisure » depuis 2004, les artistes s’intéressent à des récits culturels et historiques par la recherche, la conversation, la publication de textes, le commissariat d’exposition et la pratique artistique. Leisure a présenté des expositions et des projets spéciaux au Canada et à l’international, en plus d’avoir participé à des résidences d’artistes à St. John’s (The Rooms, Terre-Neuve, 2016); Dawson City (KIAC, Yukon, 2010); Vienna (Kunstverein das weisse haus, Autriche, 2008) et Banff (Banff Centre for the Arts, Alberta, 2007). Les recherches récentes du collectif sur le geste et la narration de l’espace comprennent Dualité/Dualité (Artexte, Montréal, 2015), Conversations With Magic Stones dans le cadre de The Let Down Reflex (EFA, New York, 2016) et Panning for Gold/Walking You Through It dans le cadre de À la recherché d’Expo 67 (Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, 2017). Leisure présente son travail régulièrement à Erin Stump Projects (ESP), Toronto, et a une oeuvre dans la collection permanente de la Galerie Leonard-et-Bina-Ellen, Montréal.
