In the course of a three-year correspondence in words and images with individuals serving life sentences in American prisons, Evelyne Leblanc-Roberge explored the representation of the sites where they live as well as those they miss. From the generic spaces they are confined in, where even the sky can take on the appearance of a wall adding itself to those of the prison, the prisoners talk about the places that occupy their dreams and their imagination. In response, the artist draws upon her personal photography archive to offer her collaborators images that evoke their words. In this way, she invites them to step out of their reality to enter a shared space, where walls can become pages on which to write to one another, images to be transported by.
This exhibition is part of our Free Time programming, which positions itself in opposition to productivity, performance, and efficiency, and in which photography appears as a tool for exploration, for making relations and conceiving of new perspectives.
Biographie de l'artiste
Evelyne Leblanc-Roberge est née à Maria en Gaspésie en 1981. Elle est titulaire d’une maîtrise en arts numériques (School of Art & Design, Alfred University, Alfred, New York) et d’un baccalauréat en photographie (Concordia University, Montréal, Canada). Elle vit présentement à Rochester (New York) où elle est professeure de photographie à l’Université de Rochester.
Evelyne a reçu la bourse de recherche et création pour artistes professionnel en arts visuels du Conseil des arts du Canada en 2015 pour son projet de livre Wall+Paper (publié par Publication Studio Hudson) issu d’une correspondance écrite et photographique en collaboration avec des détenus à vie de prisons américaines, et en 2017 pour compléter le projet Les attentes. Depuis 2008, Evelyne a été invitée à participer à plusieurs résidences de création: La Red Gate Gallery à Beijing (Chine), Digital Arts Studios à Belfast (Irlande du Nord), Visual Studies Workshop/Project Space à Rochester (New York), Signal Culture à Owego (New York), Espace F à Matane (Canada), au Magasin Général: studio international en création multidisciplinaire à Rivère-Madeleine (Canada), à La Cité internationale des Arts à Paris (France) et à 3331 Arts Chiyoda à Tokyo (Japon). Evelyne organise aussi sporadiquement des évènements et performances in-situ dans lesquelles l’exploration du lieu même devient une partie intégrante de l’expérience.
