Japanese artist Rika Noguchi’s project for VU is the result of two visits to Québec. She began her project by following the migratory paths of wild geese, where she met some arborists at work, ultimately leading her to produce the images now exhibited in the Espace américain. Presented in a luminous and limpid atmosphere that distorts the temporality of Noguchi’s images, the installation explores the fascinating world of arborists in a spirit of curiosity and poetry: humans blend into trees through strange dance-like rituals, while the trees themselves become one with the sky, in order to better escape from their urban surroundings.
This exhibition is presented in conjunction with Manif d’art 9 – La biennale de Québec.
Biographie
Rika Noguchi est née en 1971, à Saitama, au Japon. Elle a effectué sa formation au College of Art de l’Université Nihon (1994). Parmi ses expositions en solitaire se démarquent notamment celles tenues à l’Ikon Gallery (Birmingham), au Hara Museum of Contemporary Art (Tokyo), au Mongin Art Center (Séoul) et, plus récemment, à l’Izu Photo Museum (Shizuoka). Ses œuvres ont également été présentées dans le cadre d’expositions collectives au Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York), au National Art Center (Tokyo), au Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), à la 55e exposition Carnegie International et à la 21e Biennale de Sydney. Après avoir été installée 12 ans à Berlin, l’artiste vit et travaille maintenant à Okinawa.
