The passage of time alters materials, rivers, and images alike. Rocks erode, waters rise, lights turn on and off, and colours fade like memories. As the state of the world seems to worsen, artists retreat to their studios, unsure if making art is even worth it anymore. The answer, inevitably, comes from the gut. We cannot turn away from what happens here, elsewhere, before, later on; we must still seek, act, photograph, and present the things that grow out of our hands. This is how images are born: they spring out of our everyday lives and our search for meaning, for answers, or for a new place to call home.

Each in their own way, the artists from our upcoming programming season build narratives that rest on an imagining permeated by the real. By creating forms of resistance, by continuing to play in the face of shifting, uncertain times, these artists offer alternative perspectives that can deepen our view of the world. Over the next year, their time at VU will introduce us to different stories, and help us to reflect on the support we need to find stability.
